Ze heeft spel nodig, moet verrast worden en wil van elk werk dat ze maakt iets nieuws leren. Ze legt haar wil niet op aan het materiaal. Ze luistert en reageert vervolgens.
Er zijn geen directe verhalen of vaste thema’s verbonden aan haar werk. Betekenis transformeert door het maakproces zelf. Alles speelt daarin een rol: haar studio, haar materialen, wat ze leest, wat ze beoefent, oudere tradities en praktijken, en het werk van anderen.

Textile artist Maaike Gottschal her practice is driven by curiosity and rooted in radical experimentation. She needs play, she seeks to be surprised, and she wants to learn something new from every work she creates. She does not impose her will on the material. She listens, and then responds.
There are no direct narratives or fixed themes attached to her work. Meaning transforms through the process of making itself. Everything plays a role in this: her studio, her materials, what she reads, what she practices, older traditions and practices, and the work of others.
